It also addresses issues with installing US VirusScan v4.5 onto non-US operating systems and configuring the installation. _________________________________ WD1 - WHAT THIS SERVICE PACK DOES This Service Pack contains new scripts and configuration Dynamic Link Libraries that, when added to the Management Console, solve the issues documented in "IR1 - Issues Resolved in This Service Pack". __________________________________________ IR1 - ISSUES RESOLVED IN THIS SERVICE PACK 1. Previous Management Edition scripts that install the VirusScan v4.5 software on computers that run non-U.S. operating systems placed the VirusScan on-demand scanner in this directory: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates\On Demand Scanner\Scan 32\ The name of the directory can vary in localized operating system versions, so the Management Console cannot correctly start a remote scan operation. This Service Pack supplies new scripts that read the registry of the local computer after they install the VirusScan software to determine the actual location of the on-demand scanner. This information appears in the file THDEFS.CFG. 2. A previous Management Edition script (VSC_NT.INI) that installed and managed the VirusScan software to run on Windows NT would not prevent those without administrator rights from changing the configuration of the software on a local computer. Users with normal access rights, therefore, could configure the VirusScan software. The new script includes an ADMIN_SECURITY macro that, by default, prevents those with user-level permissions from changing the VirusScan software configurations. The macro takes the following form: ADMIN_SECURITY=1 To allow user-level access, change the macro value to 0 before you add the script to the Management Edition software (see Step 3 in "IN3 - Preparing to Install This Service Pack"). The line is: ADMIN_SECURITY=0 3. Previous Management Edition scripts (VSC_NT.INI and VSC_9X.INI) did not install all the VirusScan product components by default. The components are: * System Scan * E-mail Scan * Download Scan * Internet Filter The new scripts include an ALL_COMPONENTS macro that will install all VirusScan product components by default. The macro takes the following form: ALL_COMPONENTS=1 To install only the System Scan component, change the macro value to 0 before you add the scripts to the Management Edition software. To learn how to do so, see Step 4 in "IN3 - Preparing to Install This Service Pack" later in this file. The resulting line looks like this: ALL_COMPONENTS=0 4. Previous Management Edition scripts cannot run installation files on Windows 95 and Windows 98 computers that have started, but are not logged in to the network. Installations to these computers from Management Edition software can, therefore, fail. The new scripts copy installation files into a directory called INSTALLATION in the VirusScan installation directory. The VirusScan installation program then runs from this location. The Setup utility deletes the installation files that it copied when it is complete. 5. Some of the configuration settings for VirusScan were not being set correctly via the Management Edition Console. These include: A. The update of the schedule settings within the Update/Upgrade component did not function correctly. B. There was no default path for the 'Update Upgrade Activity Log.txt' file. It has been changed to be the VirusScan install directory. C. The password protection of the Update/Upgrade component was missing from the Management Edition configuration interface. This element has now been added to the configuration interface. D. The range of values allowed for in the Folder Checking parameter of the Email Detection property page has been changed to match the values used in the VirusScan product. E. The custom message string for the On Demand Scanner was not being updated from the Management Console. F: The VShield component would sometimes write a string containing illegal characters to the szNetworkAlertPath parameter in the MEUP.CFG setup file. This would corrupt the MEUP.CFG file resulting in integrity failure errors from the Management Agent. This Service Pack contains new configuration Dynamic Link Libraries (DLL's) that fix these configuration issues. __________________________________________ IF1 - FILES INCLUDED WITH THIS SERVICE PACK This Service Pack consists of a package called MEV45SP1.ZIP, which contains six new configuration Dynamic Link Libraries for updating the settings used by the VirusScan v4.5 software and two new script files. (These script files were released in a previous HotFix). The Service Pack package contains the following files: SRVPACK1.TXT = This text file. MEVSH95.DLL = VirusScan On Access Scanner configuration Dynamic Link Library for Windows 95 and Windows 98. MEVSHNT.DLL = VirusScan On Access Scanner configuration Dynamic Link Library for Windows NT. MEVSC95.DLL = VirusScan On Demand Scanner configuration Dynamic Link Library for Windows 95 and Windows 98. MEVSCNT.DLL = VirusScan On Demand Scanner configuration Dynamic Link Library for Windows NT. MEUPG95.DLL = VirusScan Update/Upgrade configuration Dynamic Link Library for Windows 95 and Windows 98. MEUPGNT.DLL = VirusScan Update/Upgrade configuration Dynamic Link Library for Windows NT. PACKING.LST = Text file containing checksum values for the Service Pack files, that you can use, if validating the files, to check that they have not been corrupted or modified. VSC_9X.INI = VirusScan installation script for Windows 95 and Windows 98. VSC_NT.INI = VirusScan installation script for Windows NT. __________________ IN1 - INSTALLATION * IN2 - INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS * To install this Service Pack, you must have Management Edition v2.0 or v2.5 software installed and operating correctly on your computer. You must also have VirusScan v4.5 already installed in the Management Edition repository. * IN3 - PREPARING TO INSTALL THIS SERVICE PACK * A complete list of the files that the Service Pack contains appears in "IF1 - Files Included with This Service Pack" earlier in this file. You must prepare the Service Pack files before adding them to the Management Console. To prepare the files, follow these steps: 1. Open the Service Pack package .ZIP file and extract all the files to a directory on the computer that contains the Management Console. 2. The new Management Edition script for Windows NT (VSC_NT.INI) includes an ADMIN_SECURITY macro that is set to prevent non-administrator access to the VirusScan software's configuration at the local computer (when the VirusScan software is installed); see Issue 2 in "IR1 - Issues Resolved in This Service Pack" earlier in this file. To allow non-administrator access, edit the VSC_NT.INI file and change the macro' value to 0: ADMIN_SECURITY=0 3. The current Management Edition scripts (VSC_NT.INI and VSC_9X.INI) do not install all the VirusScan product components by default. The components are: * System Scan * E-mail Scan * Download Scan * Internet Filter The new scripts include an ALL_COMPONENTS macro will install all VirusScan product components by default. The macro takes this form: ALL_COMPONENTS=1 To install only the System Scan component, change the macro's value to 0 before you add the scripts to the Management Edition software (see Step 4 in "IN3 - Preparing to Install This Service Pack"). The resulting line will look like this: ALL_COMPONENTS=0 4. The current Management Edition scripts cannot run installation files on Windows 95 and Windows 98 computers that have started, but are not logged in to the network. Installations to these computers from Management Edition software can, therefore, fail. The new scripts copy installation files into a directory called INSTALLATION (which is below the VirusScan installation directory). The VirusScan installation program then runs from this location. Setup then deletes those installation files it copied when it finishes. * IN4 - INSTALLATION STEPS * 1. Open the Management Console. 2. Choose the Repository option from the Tools menu. 3. Right-click the VirusScan component and select 'Update Script' from the popup menu that appears. 4. Browse to locate the VSC_NT.INI and VSC_9X.INI files that you extracted from the Service Pack package .ZIP file. 5. Select the one of the files, and then click OK. 6. Repeat Step 3 to Step 5 this time selecting the other file. 7. In the repository, right-click the VirusScan component and select 'Update Extension DLL' from the popup menu that appears. 8. Browse to locate the MEVSH95.DLL file in the directory where you extracted the files from the Service Pack package .ZIP file. 9. Select one of the DLL files, and then click Open. A dialog appears, showing all the versions of this DLL in the repository. 10. Select the checkbox that refers to the version v4.5.0 only, and then click OK. 11. Repeat Step 9 and Step 10 for the other five DLL files (MEVSHNT.DLL, MEVSC95.DLL, MEVSCNT.DLL, MEUPG95.DLL and MEUPGNT.DLL). 12. Click Close. * IN5 - TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION * The Service Pack update will not have any effect until either VirusScan v4.50 is installed to a previously unmanaged machine or configuration settings are applied to a managed machine with VirusScan v4.50 already installed. To check that the configuration Dynamic Link Libraries are installed correctly you can check their versions. To do this you can click on the 'About' button in each of the VirusScan v4.50 component configuration dialog boxes and compare the version numbers displayed with the ones below: VShield 95/NT = v1.0.10 VirusScan 95/NT = v1.0.8 Alerting Client = v1.0.0 Update/Upgrade 95/NT = v1.0.4 All the configuration Dynamic Link Libraries in this Service Pack must be installed together into the repository for them to function correctly. * IN6 - REMOVING THIS SERVICE PACK * If you have a copy of the original VirusSca package .ZIP file (VSCI45L.ZIP), you can revert to the previous VirusScan scripts and configuration Dynamic Link Libraries by updating the Management Console repository with the original files. To do this repeat the installation steps described in the section 'IN4 - Installation Steps' using the files from the original VirusScan package file. __________________________________ NA1 - CONTACTING MCAFEE AND NETWORK ASSOCIATES On December 1, 1997, McAfee Associates merged with Network General Corporation, Pretty Good Privacy, Inc., and Helix Software, Inc. to form Network Associates, Inc.
